His family lived in the Denver area in the same house from the 1870’s all the way to the 1980’s when his final descendant passed away leaving the house to a caretaker. Photo Credit: Helen H. A history buff, Christopherson has been collecting items such as old badges, newspaper clippings, old uniforms, books, minutes from police meetings and many other items to put into the museum. Photo Credit: Helen H. Richardson, The Denver Post This uniform was worn by police officers circa 1890’s. It is made of wool and had either copper or brass buttons. Museum board member, Dean Christopherson said one theory of where the term COP comes from is that they used to have copper buttons on their uniforms. People would refer to them as coppers from the copper buttons on their uniforms. Photo Credit: Helen H. Richardson, The Denver Post This is a photo from a police celebration in 1900. In it is police sergeant Arthur Martyn, at right. At far left is a patrolman wearing one of the uniforms that Dean Christopherson has in his collection. Photo Credit: Helen H. Those too young to recall that war may remember these from the TV show MASH. This is a photo of a Denver Police Squad in the early 1900s. Note the “bobby” style helmets, the long top coats and the six pointed badge. Also all those mustaches!. Also take note of the absence of visible side arms.
