HONOR FALLEN OFFICERS FOR POLICE WEEK
DENVER, CO (May 4, 2021)—The Denver Police Museum, Denver Police Foundation, and the Denver Police Department will host a series of events honoring fallen officers during National Police Week May 8-15, 2021.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy declared May 15 as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and this week National Police Week. The purpose of the proclamation was to pay tribute to the law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and to voice our appreciation for all those who currently serve on the front lines of the battle against crime.
This year, the Denver Police Museum has planned a number of outside socially distanced events to recognize Denver’s 72 fallen officers and the nearly 9,000 individuals who have served the City and County of Denver since the founding of the department in 1859.
MAY 8-15, 2021: LIGHTING OF THE DENVER CITY AND COUNTY BUILDING
The Denver City Office of Special Events is partnering with the Denver Police Museum to highlight National Police Week by lighting the Denver City and County Building blue from May 8 through May 15, 2021.
MAY 8, 2021: OFFICIAL POLICE WEEK KICK OFF
At 11:00am on Saturday, May 8, 2021 simultaneous wreath-laying and flag placement ceremonies will be held at five major cemeteries to honor Denver’s fallen officers, including Crown Hill, Riverside, Mt. Olivet, Fairmount and Fort Logan.
MAY 10, 2021: SIGN CEREMONY FOR FALLEN OFFICER JACOB BRENNER
The Denver Police Museum has undertaken a program to place memorial signs at the locations where fallen officers made the ultimate sacrifice. At 1:30pm on Monday, May 10, 2021 Museum volunteers, retired and active officers and family members will honor fallen officer Jacob Brenner by unveiling a memorial sign at 3142 Osage Street.
MAY 12, 2021: SIGN CEREMONY FOR FALLEN OFFICER WILLIAM KEATING
At 3:00pm on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 the Denver Police Museum will place a memorial sign at the location where fallen officer William Keating made the ultimate sacrifice at 8th Avenue between Kalamath and Santa Fe Avenue. The Denver Police Museum would like to thank the International Police Association for their generous donation which paid for this memorial sign. Museum volunteers, retired and active officers along with family members are expected to attend this event.
MAY 9-15, 2021: HONOR THE FALLEN RUN/WALK
The Denver Police Foundation is hosting an “Honor the Fallen Run/Walk” that aims to honor the 72 Denver officers who have died in the line of duty. The Foundation is encouraging participants to complete a run or walk (at any distance they choose) during police week Sunday, May 9 through Saturday, May 15, 2021.
